On the initiative of the Lord Mayor, a City Council Commission for Integration was set up in 2002 with representatives from the City Hall parliamentary groups, members of the Nuremberg Council for Integration and Immigration and experts. The committee deals with all issues affecting people with a migration background in Nuremberg. It is also the specialist committee responsible for dealing with the resolutions and concerns of the Nuremberg Council for Integration and Immigration as a body representing the interests of Nuremberg residents with a migration background.

At the same time, an internal administrative coordination group was created, which includes employees with planning and coordination tasks from all departments and divisions of the city. The unit provides mutual information and coordinates plans across departments. With this coordination group, the topic of ‘integration’ was finally established as a cross-sectional task.

To support the integration programme, a ‘Board of Trustees for Diversity and Cohesion’ was also set up, in which all relevant social forces are represented.

The Lord Mayor chairs both the Board of Trustees and the Commission.
